Ashtanga Yoga with Kory Sheffer

  • Mysore Class

Mysore style classes share their namesake with their birthplace of Mysore, India. This is the traditional method of passing on the teachings of Yoga from teacher to student in a one on one fashion. Students practice together in the same room however, everyone moves at their own pace, receives specific and individual instruction from the teacher, and progresses at a speed appropriate for their ability.

Mysore classes are a progressive learning experience in that postures, breathing techniques, and philosophies are learned over a period of time. As a student integrates what he or she has learned and is ready for more, the teaching advances - because of this approach, Mysore Classes are not “drop in” classes. To reap the benefits of a Mysore practice a student must be ready and willing to commit to practicing with us a minimum of two to three mornings per week.

All individuals may practice Mysore Ashtanga - it is truly one of the best ways to begin. While it may seem intimidating at first, after the first few breaths all students will feel right at home.

  • Guided Primary Series

Guided Classes are a way for all students to move and breathe together in unison - much like a modern “vinyasa” class. A traditional Ashtanga guided class is taught using Sanskrit counting and breath cues to guide students in and out of postures - for example, the first cue of Sun Salutation A is “Ekam (one) Inhale” which signals students to take the first movement of raising arms overhead while inhaling.

The intention behind guided class is to help students with memorization of postures, synchronization of breath to movement, and to provide space for students to release any forcefulness or unhealthy attachment to perfection.

Guided classes are a wonderful bonding experience for the community of students. At our shala we end class with a “chat and chai” gathering in the Alchemy kitchen.

Our guided classes are typically held on the first Sunday of each month.

Kory Sheffer - Alchemy Studio Founder + Ashtanga Yoga Cleveland Director

KORY is the founder and director of Alchemy Studio + Ashtanga Yoga Cleveland. Formerly, Kory was the founder and director of Ashtanga Yoga Napa Valley (Napa, California) which flourished from 2015 - 2020. Yoga found Kory over a decade ago through common Western and gym styled classes. Intrigued by the source material, she sought a more meaningful and comprehensive Yoga experience, discovering Ashtanga Yoga to her delight. Kory began this journey with Vance Selover (Berkeley, California) and gradually ventured to Ashtanga Yoga luminary Tim Miller (Encinitas, California) where she engaged in regular practice from 2014 through 2019.

Fortunate geographic proximity led Kory to meet Harvard PhD candidate and founder of Yogic Studies, Seth Powell in 2018. His mastery of Yogic history, philosophy, and Sanskrit language encouraged her to further her curiosity in these subjects. She regularly participates in Seth’s Yogic Studies online courses and invites him to share his immense knowledge and engaging teaching style with her community of students. In January of 2020 Kory co-led a retreat with Seth to some of the most sacred sites in the state of Karnataka, India. Kory credits Seth with catalyzing and fostering some of her most profound realizations in her time as a student of Yoga.

In June of 2019 Kory studied for one month in Bali under the guidance of Mark Robberds. She has been profoundly inspired by Mark’s experience and approach to integrating alternative movement modalities such as FRC and Kinstretch into the practice while maintaining the integrity of the Ashtanga Yoga method.

Kory has twice embarked on sojourns to Mysore India - November and December of 2016 and June and July of 2018 for intensive study with Sharath Jois at KPJAYI, now known as the Sharath Yoga Center.

Most recently, in February of 2020 Kory received certification from FRS (Functional Range Systems) as an FRC movement specialist. She is currently working on completing her Level 1 Certification with Animal Flow, and in 2023 she will sit for the Level 1 Kinstretch training and Certification.

In the Mysore room Kory is a supportive and encouraging teacher. She recognizes that all students are different and will require a unique and individual approach. While Kory adheres to the “traditional” framework of the Ashtanga Yoga sequencing and methodology, she will provide supportive and at times alternative suggestions - which may include deeper anatomical research or physical conditioning to ensure that each posture is appropriate for students to incorporate into their practice. When studying and practicing with Kory students can expect to be challenged in a supportive and positive manner; engaged in deep self-study, discovery & reflection; and inspired by the awakening of limitless potential.
