In Sutra 1.33 of the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali beautifully articulates the essence of cultivating the Four Boundless:
Maitri (loving-kindness) toward the happy, Karuna (compassion) for those who suffer, Mudita (joy) for the virtuous, and Upekkha (equanimity) toward those who are not. When we embody these qualities, our minds find peace and ease.

In the Buddhist tradition, this teaching is often referred to as “The Four Boundless” or “The Immeasurables,” underscoring their importance as central practices. These qualities invite us to cultivate love and compassion in our daily lives to the fullest extent.

Join Cory for a transformative weekend focused on exploring these great qualities. Through a series of engaging discussions, yoga practices, and meditation sessions, you will learn what these qualities are, how they function, and effective ways to develop them in your life. The Listen - Contemplate - Meditate framework will guide our practice, making these sessions accessible to everyone, regardless of experience level.

What are the Four Immeasurables, and Loving Kindness, with Cory

Saturday June 7th 12:00 - 3:00 PM

12:00 - 1:30 pm: What are the Four Immeasurables? - An introduction to the Buddha’s teachings on the Four Noble Truths and how, through the development of the understanding of our minds, we can cultivate the qualities of love, compassion, joy, and equanimity to support the alleviation of ours, and others, suffering.

(Short break)

2:00 - 3:00 pm: Loving Kindness - Love is an innate quality of being alive. Seeded in our mutual desire to be happy. Shared by all beings, this is an aspect of ourselves that we can cultivate to the extent that it overrides the challenges we face, and serves as a foundation for showing up with a kind heart in all situations.

What are the Four Immeasurables - Compassion, Sympathetic Joy, and Equanimity with Cory.

Sunday June 8th 12:00 - 3:30 PM

12:00 - 1:00 pm: Compassion - We hear it cited all over the place these days, but what is its true meaning? And how do we avoid running out of it? This and more will be the focus of this conversation as we continue to explore the power of meditation to cultivate our innate goodness.
(Short break)

1:15 - 2:15 pm: Sympathetic Joy - Living in a consumer and success-based society, with an increasing disparity between the financially rich versus the poor, can leave us stretched thin when it comes to being happy for others. But, are we looking at it from a beneficial standpoint? Is it possible to rejoice in others’ success and not end up feeling depressed when it doesn’t come for us? We’ll explore what the Buddhist masters have to say and how it might enable our own capacity for expressing JOY!
(Short break)

2:30 - 3:30 pm: Equanimity - This just might be the key to it all. In fact, we’ll be encountering this component of the overall “boundless” equation throughout the weekend because it’s this ability to maintain some level of impartiality that is just what we need to be our best loving-kind, compassionate, joyful self!

Closing meal and hang out!

Sunday June 8th 3:30 PM

After Sunday’s workshop ends, we’ll hang out and share a meal to close out our weekend! Alchemy Studio will organize a catered vegetarian meal for all participants. This is the perfect way to end a wonderful weekend together!

About the teachers…

  • Cory Bryant

Cory discovered yoga shortly after 9/11, while living in NYC —initially through a soft introduction at the Integral Hatha Yoga Institute in the West Village and then with the mind-blowing, tapas-inducing experience of Jivamukti Yoga. Since that time, pretty much everything about the way he views the world has been challenged, bringing with it transformation from a goal-oriented, judgmental, high-tempered, career-driven person to the more even-minded, compassionate person he humbly aspires to be today.

Cory began teaching yoga at Flow Yoga Center in Washington, DC, in 2008 after completing teacher training at Flow in 2007 and Jivamukti in 2008. In the years that followed, his commitment to practice and teaching continually deepened, and in December 2015, he resigned from an international food policy position at the U.S. Food & Drug Administration to pursue yoga study, practice and teaching full-time.

Cory’s own practice is an integration of Tibetan Buddhism (of the Kagyu-Nyingma lineage of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche) and Ashtanga Yoga. His main teachers are Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and his brother Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche — both sons of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche — along with Khenpo Tokpa Tulku and Any Gyan Tara (of Nagi Gompa Nunnery) all in Nepal. His study and practice of Ashtanga Yoga has been supported by Tim Feldmann, Jen René, Michael Joel Hall, Maggie Lively, Tim Miller and David Garrigues. He completed Tim Miller’s 2nd Series TT in 2016, and David Garrigues’ 2nd Series Intensive and 10-day Teacher’s Intensive in 2017 followed by 2 years of apprenticeship. David Life, Sharon Gannon, Ruth Lauer Manenti, Andrea Boyd, Jill Abelson and Alanna Kaivalya of Jivamukti Yoga were his early teachers and mentors and he attributes much of his understanding of yoga to them. Cory practices and teaches the Primary (Yoga Chikitsa) and Intermediate (Nadi Shodana) Series of Ashtanga Yoga.

  • Marque Garaux

Marque Garaux, is a retired U.S Marine Veteran, long time rock climber and overall outdoor enthusiast

Marque discovered Ashtanga Yoga while seeking different ways to alleviate his lower back pain. After noticing an almost immediate physical change, Marque then slowly began to see other positive changes happening in his life as well. With no Ashtanga teachers in the area, he found himself with no choice but to get up early and practice on his own before work everyday. During this time Marque also attended a 200 teacher training and several Ashtanga workshops and intensives to deepen his understanding of this beautiful system.

In the fall of 2014 Marque decided to follow in the footsteps of the teachers that he most respected and applied for study at the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (KPJAYI). Marque was accepted and spent the first 2 months of 2015 in Mysore, India learning under the guidance of R. Sharath Jois. Marque has practiced with Sharath during multipe US tours and has also returned to India each year since and has practiced with both Sharath and Saraswathi. Marque received the blessing (Level 2 Authorization) from Sharath on December 12th, 2017 during his morning practice.
